The wake of a three-dimensional underwater obstacle: Effect of bottom boundary conditions

Abstract

Non-hydrostatic simulations of flow past a deep 3-D obstacle are conducted. Simulations resolve turbulence, internal waves and wake vortices. The type of boundary condition (BC) affects lee vortices and turbulence. The partial-slip drag law BC is best for geophysical wakes. Stratification and baroclinicity are essential for geophysical lee vortices.
