As their cognitive and emotional capacities mature, individuals begin to cultivate an ability to understand and share the feelings of others, commonly referred to as empathy.

Adolescence: The period of adolescence is characterized by significant emotional transformation. Adolescents undergo significant physiological and psychological transformations, while concurrently embarking on a journey of self-discovery and attempting to establish their position within society. The cognitive domains that have been most extensively studied and impacted include attention and processing speed, executive function, and memory. In various experimental settings, it has been observed that exposure to cold temperatures tends to have a negative impact on cognitive performance in the aforementioned domains. It is noteworthy to mention that the diminishment of cognitive functioning may transpire prior to the onset of accidental hypothermia. In response to a cold environment, the human body activates a range of physiological mechanisms to regulate its temperature, including shivering, inhibition of sweating, and skin vasoconstriction. The regulation of these responses is governed by the temperature-regulating centers located in the hypothalamus, as well as the temperature receptors present in the skin. Furthermore, there is a form of temperature regulation through behavioral means, wherein individuals respond to cold discomfort by donning insulated clothing or seeking refuge [66].

In the context of intentional exposure to cold for the purposes of enhancing health and performance, there exist specific factors that warrant attention. Prioritizing personal safety is of utmost importance, and it is imperative to steer clear of hazardous circumstances. The optimal temperature for intentional cold exposure is subject to interindividual variability, and it is imperative to identify a temperature that elicits a sensation of intense coldness while remaining within safe thresholds for a specified period of time. According to research findings, specific physiological responses can be elicited with a shorter exposure time when the stimulus is colder. Empirical evidence suggests that individuals experience notable and extended elevations in dopamine levels upon immersion in cool water (approximately 60°F) for a duration of approximately one hour while keeping their heads above water. Brief exposures lasting approximately 20 seconds to frigid water with a temperature of approximately 40°F can result in noteworthy elevations in epinephrine concentrations. Intentional exposure to cold temperatures may have an effect on an individual's energy levels and ability to concentrate.
